Longevity Starts in the Bowl: 5 Natural Moves to Give Your Dog or Cat Extra Healthy Years in 2025

by Thomas Sandberg, Board‑Certified Animal Naturopath

“Pay the farmer—or pay the vet.”
My mentors drilled that into me 30 years ago, and 2025’s data prove it true once again: pet parents who prioritise day‑to‑day wellness spend far less on emergency care and enjoy more quality years with their animals. A Banfield survey of 5,000 owners found preventive‑care devotees had up to 40 % fewer urgent‑care visits
in 2024 (DVM 360).

Below are the five evidence‑backed, budget‑friendly steps I recommend most often in consultations and at my upcoming rescue‑rehab centre.

1️⃣ Reinvent the Bowl

Fresh, species‑appropriate food is the mother of all prevention.

  • Rotate wisely. Each protein brings a unique nutrient fingerprint—rotate chicken, turkey, grass‑fed beef, oily fish, even novel proteins like rabbit or venison.
  • Balance matters. Add meaty bones, or 10 % finely ground bone (or balanced calcium/phosphorus powder) plus 10 % organ meat to hit ancestral ratios.
  • Watch the legumes. The FDA’s March 2025 field notice again flagged heavy legume loads in “grain‑free” kibble as a possible contributor to dilated cardiomyopathy (U.S. Food and Drug Administration). Use lentils and peas sparingly and pair with taurine‑rich sardines or heart muscle. Many avoid veggies and fruits altogether.

Quick swap: If you’re not ready for full raw, add one fresh topper—sardines, freeze‑dried raw or a fermented goat‑milk splash—over any kibble. Exchange the kibble with raw as soon as you do allow it. If you need help switching, I wrote a book about it.

2️⃣ Guard the Waistline

Obesity steals years faster than almost any other modifiable factor. In 2024 the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention pegged 35 % of dogs and 33 % of cats as overweight or obese, a sharp rise from 2023 (Association for Pet Obesity Prevention).

  • Body‑Condition Score check, monthly. Aim for a visible waist and easily felt ribs under a paper‑thin fat layer.
  • 20-30‑minute “Sniffari” walks. Short, scent‑rich strolls trigger mental enrichment and calorie burn. But most importantly, it activates the lymphatic system, purging toxins and chemicals from the body.
  • Treat audit. Treat calories should stay under 10 % of daily intake—swap carb‑heavy biscuits for freeze‑dried liver slivers. I never give treats to my dogs; they don’t know what that is, so they are not suffering, and they never beg for anything.

3️⃣ Build the Microbiome, Build Immunity

Gut dysbiosis drives allergies, IBD and even anxiety. Simple daily habits:

  1. Fermented foods – 1 tsp/10 lb raw sauerkraut juice (dogs) or kefir (cats).
  2. Prebiotic fibres – chia pudding, pumpkin purée, ground flax.
  3. Soil‑based probiotics – rotate strains monthly to avoid monoculture. I use FidoSpore.

Within weeks most owners report smaller, less odorous stools, clearer eyes and calmer behaviour.

4️⃣ Targeted Functional Supplements

A Forbes Advisor analysis shows 53 % of dog owners and 34 % of cat owners now give daily supplements (Forbes). My “Longevity Core Four”:

Supplement Why it matters Typical starting dose*
High‑DHA Fish Oil anti‑inflammatory, heart & brain 30 mg DHA/lb
Turmeric/Curcumin anti‑neoplastic, joint 50 mg/lb (with fat & pepper)
Fermented Mushrooms  NK‑cell stimulation, anti‑cancer 100 mg extract/10 lb
Green‑Lipped Mussel cartilage repair, natural NSAID 15 mg PCSO‑524/lb

Always adjust for species, age and medical status; consult your holistic vet.

5️⃣ Catch Trouble Early—Naturally

Smart feeders and collar sensors now flag deviations in pulse, HRV and gait days before outward symptoms (avmajournals.avma.org). Pair tech with these low‑tech habits:

  • Weekly nose‑to‑tail exam – check gums, ears, coat, paws and stool.
  • Quarterly baseline labs – CBC, chemistry, vitamin‑D, thyroid.
  • Annual oral radiographs – dental disease slashes life expectancy.

Bottom Line

Longevity isn’t a magic pill—it’s the compound interest of tiny daily choices. Start with one change this week (swap in fresh toppers, trim treat calories, add a mushroom blend) and build from there. Your dog or cat will thank you with wagging tails and purrs well into their senior years.

Need help with your pet?

Do you have health issues that you cannot resolve with conventional therapies? Are you looking for a natural approach to help your pet live a long healthy life?

This is possible, and what I do. My approach is to restore the immune system in dogs and cats so they can achieve homeostasis. That is the best protection against pathogens that can lead to diseases.
